Many Magnificent Moonwalkers

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Many magnificent moonwalkers inspired Michael Jackson to live his life with purpose. The greats who danced before him paved a pathway for Michael, which allowed him to take-off running, determined to play his role in HIStory. Michael was born with wings for feet, and a heart bursting with courage, joy and enthusiasm. He studied the unique moves of silent film stars, and those of classic and modern entertainers from a variety of genres.  MJ’s favorite mentors and teachers, both on film and in-person, included the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Marcel Marceau, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Cab Calloway, Bill Bailey, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr., David Bowie, Jeffrey Daniel, as well as populations of indigenous peoples with their tribal dances.

CLASSIC  STEPS, SLIDES AND MOVES

In the current generation, “Moonwalk” has become synonymous with Michael Jackson and his phenomenally successful song and dance performance, Billie Jean. However…

“There are many recorded instances of the moonwalk. Similar steps are reported as far back as 1932, used by Cab Calloway. The [on stage] origin is the pantomime exercise “Marche sur place” created by mime masters Etienne Decroux and Jean-Louis Barrault and first recorded on film for Children of Paradise in 1944/45). In 1955 it was recorded in a performance by tap dancer Bill Bailey. He performs a tap routine, and at the end, backslides into the wings. The French mime artist Marcel Marceau used it throughout his career (1940s through 1980s), as part of the drama of his mime routines.” ~Wikipedia

Throughout his teen years, Michael Jackson was a big fan of Soul Train, a long-running musical variety television show, on which Jeffrey Daniel had been a featured performer. Michael was a big fan of Jeffrey Daniel’s dancing. Jeffrey had developed unique robotic and marionette-like dance moves which became his signature style by 1982, before MJ shook the house down with his own expression of the “backslide” move. In fact, MJ had hired Jeffrey, who taught him the “backslide.” After the Motown 25 performance in 1983, what had been previously called the “backslide” was forever renamed the “Moonwalk.” Jeffrey remained a part of MJ’s choreography team for numerous concert tours and music videos, over many years, while Michael continued to develop and expand his own unique song and dance repertoire.

“The “moonwalk” or “backslide” is a dance technique that presents the illusion of the dancer being pulled backwards while attempting to walk forward…it became popular around the world after Michael Jackson executed the dance move during a performance of “Billie Jean” on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever on March 25, 1983. It subsequently became his signature move, and is now one of the best-known  dance techniques in the world.

Original “Billie Jean” Performance ~ Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever

“An illusion is involved in creating the appearance of the dancer gliding. The leg being pulled up moves the leg behind it back (with the toes still touching the ground) and transfers the weight on to it. The leg with weight on it goes up and the other leg is drawn back in turn. These steps are repeated over and over. Variations of this move allow the backslider to also appear to glide forwards, sideways, and even in a circle.” ~Wikipedia

This creative video, edited with much artistic license, is as humorous as it is enticingly believable!

Music journalist, Ian Inglis wrote that MJ “encapsulated a long tradition of African-American movements” in the original Billie Jean performance. The audience went wild during Michael’s moonwalk, and from then on, it became his signature move for Billie Jean. It was said that Michael’s rendition combined Jackie Wilson’s athleticism with James Brown’s camel walk.

TWO ROCKETS LAUNCHED
During the summer of 1969, Michael was almost 11 years old. Soon, he and his brothers, The Jackson 5, would STAND on the TV launching pad of The Ed Sullivan Show, and blast off through sonic waves into a world hungry for change.

In July of that same summer, astronaut Neil Armstrong wriggled out of a square hole in the Eagle spacecraft, and became the first human to touch the moon’s surface. Armstrong’s famous statement reverberated throughout the universe: “That’s one small step for man… one giant leap for mankind.” Soon after, Buzz Aldrin climbed out, and remarked, “Beautiful! Beautiful! Magnificent desolation.”

The parallels are thought-provoking. Two rockets launched toward unknown stardom. Two groups of astronauts experienced a journey to unfathomed heights, destined to alter the course of their lives, and the lives of humankind. Each carried a torch illuminating insights and new perspectives. Two events catalyzed awareness of perceived spacial and racial boundaries; two more angles from which to herald in the impending, and inevitable, paradigm shift.

“That’s one small step for man… one giant leap for mankind.”
STAND
Stand! In the end you’ll still be you
One that’s done all the things you set out to do.

Stand! There’s a cross for you to bear
Things to go through if you’re going anywhere.

Stand! For the things you know are right.
It’s the truth that the truth makes them so uptight.

Stand! All the things you want are real.
You have you to complete and there is no deal.

Yeah yeah yeah yeah. Oom bah bah bah Oom bah bah bah
Stand! Stand!
Huh! Ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya
Stand! Ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya

Stand! They will try to make you crawl.
And they know what they’re saying makes no sense at all.

Stand! Don’t you know that you are free?
Well, at least in your mind if you want to be.

Huh! Hah! Ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya
Huh! Hah! Ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya

SMILE…Though a Tear May Be Ever So Near

Friday, August 27th, 2010

“SMILE” originated as instrumental theme music, composed by Charlie Chaplin, for a  soundtrack in the 1936 silent movie Modern Times. It has been a familiar melody since that era.

In 1954, John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added lyrics to the music; and the updated song charted the music billboards at #10 when  Nat King Cole sang, and recorded it, that same year. Since then, dozens of recording artists worldwide have insured that this classic composition remained popular.

Since Nat King Cole’s hit, dozens of recording artist have sung “SMILE,” including Neil Sedaka, Elvis Costello, Michael Bolton, Michael Bublé, Barbara Streisand, Josh Groban and Zee Avi. To see a comprehensive list of recordings of “SMILE,” CLICK HERE, and scroll down to “Other Versions.”

Brooke Shields, a longtime, personal friend of Michael Jackson, shared that “SMILE” was a favorite song of his. Michael also dearly loved Charlie Chaplin, from whom he drew much inspiration. MJ said “everybody knows that Charlie Chaplin is a genius, and he’s my inspiration.”

Unexpected Fan Jumps on Cherry Picker

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

During this concert performance of Earth Song, Michael Jackson, the quintessential professional that he was, handled this crazy fan with loving care and precision, never showing any negative emotion in his face. With an aggressive, unexpected visitor on the ascending cherry picker, Michael continued passionately singing, never missing a beat while his strong, protective arm maneuvered and held the boy, deliberately keeping him from harm. Truly an amazing and impressive sight!

God’s Glow Heals the World, and Our Hearts

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Michael Jackson’s death was a tragedy. It seems as if it is something that should not have happened. It seems unfair that his children were abandoned, and left without their loving “Daddy.” It seems unfair that the world lost the artist of the century, who was an inspiration and a joy to many millions worldwide. http://www.inspiredvisuals.com/Photography/Images/Flora/BleedingHearts.jpg Uncountable hearts continue to bleed with grief. It seems as if a great evil occurred when a lethal dose of surgical anesthetic was administered to Michael. It seems unfair that money, power and greed drive people to hurt each other.

Life isn’t always fair, in the way that we deem fair. But life moves toward balance and wholeness. My insightful daughter reminds me that, “God never allows an evil to occur where he will not bring a greater good.” Her wisdom calls to mind a passage in the Jewish and Christian Scriptures which narrates the story of Joseph, whose brothers tried to kill him. “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones. So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.” ~Genesis 50:20

God’s control over Joseph’s life is confirmed by the fact that “evil devised became good bestowed,” with God’s Providence overriding the many wicked deeds suffered by Joseph. The theme of Divine Providence permeates the entire story of Joseph, and illustrates God’s ability to guide the course of history. As difficult as it is to recognize, our sufferings often have a purpose within that Divine Providence.

Michael said it himself:
“I know that keepin’ the faith
Means never givin’ up on love
But the power that love has
Has to make it right

The one purpose of evil in the Providence of God is to cause us to seek Him. “God whispers to us in our pleasure, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts to us in our pains; it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” ~C. S. Lewis

The untimely death of Michael Jackson is like a megaphone rousing a deaf world. Grief-stricken hearts are listening. Michael’s message is simple. “It’s all for love…L.O.V.E.” His music and his message are resounding over the globe even more so in his death than in his life. Global harmony was Michael’s deepest desire. Harmony around the globe is Michael’s precious gift.

Music and Me (1973)

We’ve been together for such a long time now
Music, music and me
Don’t care whether all our songs rhyme
Now music, music and me
Only know wherever I go
We’re as close as two friends can be
There have been others
But never two lovers
Like music, music and me

Grab a song and come along
You can sing your melody
In your mind you will find
A world of sweet harmony

Birds of a feather will fly together
Now music, music and me
Music and me

To reiterate the significance of the story of Joseph, we could also say that the theme of Divine Providence permeates the entire story of Michael Joseph, and the illustration of God’s ability to guide the course of history remains to be seen. As difficult as it is to recognize, our sufferings often have a purpose within that Divine Providence, lest our hearts bleed for naught ♥

There’s a place in your heart
And I know that it is love
And this place could be much
Brighter than tomorrow.
And if you really try
You’ll find there’s no need to cry
In this place you’ll feel
There’s no hurt or sorrow.
There are ways to get there
If you care enough for the living
Make a little space, make a better place.

Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for
You and for me.

If you want to know why
There’s a love that cannot lie
Love is strong
It only cares for joyful giving.
If we try we shall see
In this bliss we cannot feel
Fear or dread
We stop existing and start living
Then it feels that always
Love’s enough for us growing
Make a better world, make a better world.

Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race.
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for
You and for me.

And the dream we would conceived in
Will reveal a joyful face
And the world we once believed in
Will shine again in grace
Then why do we keep strangling life
Wound this earth, crucify it’s soul
Though it’s plain to see, this world is heavenly
Be God’s glow.

We could fly so high
Let our spirits never die
In my heart I feel
You are all my brothers
Create a world with no fear
Together we’ll cry happy tears
See the nations turn
Their swords into plowshares
We could really get there
If you cared enough for the living
Make a little space to make a better place.

Heal the world…

There are people dying if you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me.
There are people dying if you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me.

Munich Medley 1996

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

This is truly a joy-filled concert! It is one of my all time Michael experiences. To put the timing in context, this Munich performance was part of the HIStory World Tour in September of 1996. It would be another seven years before all HELL would break loose with the airing of Martin Bashir’s twisted documentary in 2003, and culminating in the 2005 trial based on the Arvizo Family extortion plans and accusations.
http://images2.fanpop.com/images/photos/6900000/Michael-s-baby-OK-michael-jackson-6939219-474-567.jpg At the time of this concert, Michael was blissfully anticipating the birth of his first child, the magic that, for him, would stand before all magic. Five months later Michael’s miracle, Prince, came into his life. He must have been so very excited living in anticipation of the supreme crowning glory of his entire life. The emotion in his voice, with every song, is profound. L.O.V.E. at it’s best!

Blessed are those who were there in person! He sincerely told his fans in the crowd, “I love you more…” Then with glowing smiles and giggles he repeats the phrase IN GERMAN! ” “Ich liebe dich mehr!” with more sweeeeet smiles ♥♥♥ He gives the gift of a bow to the audience in his playful way. He professes DEEP love from “the abyss” of his heart. He orders a bug to swept off the stage… without killing it! Michael oozes so much joy. This video captures MJ at his sweetest.

“TRUST” by Michael Jackson

TRUST ~Michael Jackson, from Dancing The Dream, published 1992

“As I was feeding squirrels in the park, I noticed a small one that didn’t seem to trust me. While the others came close enough to eat out of my hand, he kept his distance. I threw a peanut his way. He edged up, grabbed it nervously, and ran off.

Next time he must have felt less afraid, because he came a little closer. The safer he felt, the more he trusted me. Finally he sat right at my feet, as bold as any squirrel clamoring for the next peanut.

Trust is like that – it always seems to come down to trusting in yourself. Others can’t overcome fear for you; you have to do it on your own. It’s hard, because fear and doubt hold on tight. We are afraid of being rejected, of being hurt once more. So we keep a safe distance. We think separating ourselves from others will protect us, but that doesn’t work, either. It leaves us feeling alone and unloved.

Trusting yourself begins by recognizing that it’s okay to be afraid. Having fear is not the problem, because everyone feels anxious and insecure sometimes. The problem is not being honest enough to admit your fear. Whenever I accept my own doubt and insecurity, I’m more open to other people. The deeper I go into myself, the stronger I become, because I realize that my real self is much bigger than any fear.

In accepting yourself completely, trust becomes complete. There is no longer any separation between people, because there is no longer any separation inside.

In the space where fear used to live, love is allowed to grow.”

We wear the mask!

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be overwise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;

But let the world dream otherwise,

We wear the mask!

~Paul Luarence Dunbar (1872-1906)

Famous abolitionist Frederick Douglass once called Paul Luarence Dunbar “the most promising young colored man in America.”

Thanks the unknown artist who created this stunning painting, and  to MJ fan, Jennifer Mc, for the inspiration to post this poem ♥

We’ve Had Enough ~ Just Let God Decide

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010
We’ve Had Enough ~Written by Michael Jackson ~ MJ Connections Fanvid [HQ]

Love was taken from a young life
And no one told her why
Her direction has a dim light
From one more violent crime

She innocently questioned why
Why her father had to die
She asked the men in blue
How is it that you get to choose
Who will live and who will die
Did God say that you could decide?
You saw he didn’t run
And that my daddy had no gun

In the middle of the village
Within a distant land
Lies a poor boy with tears, broken toy
Too young to understand
He’s awakened, ground is shakin’
His father grabs his hand
Screaming, crying, his wife’s dying
Now he’s left to explain
He innocently questioned why
Why his mother had to die
What did these soldiers come here for?
If they’re for peace why is there war?
Did God say that they could decide
Who will live and who will die?
All my mama ever did
Was try to take care of her kids
When innocence is standing by
Watching people losing lives
It seems as if we have no voice
It’s time for us to make a choice
Only God could decide

Who will live and who will die
There’s nothing that can’t be done
If we raise our voice as one
Did God hear it from me?
Did God hear it from you?
Did God hear it from us?
We can’t take it
We’ve already had enough
Did God hear it from me?
Did God hear it from you?
Did God hear it from us?
We can’t take it
We’ve already had enough
Thank God I hear it from me
Thank God I hear it from you
Thank God it came from you babe
We can’t take it
We’ve already had enough
Deep in my soul baby
(Deep in your soul and by your side)
Deep in my soul
(It’s so big and I’m still alive)
Did God hear it from us?
We can’t take it
We’ve already had enough
It’s going down baby
Just let God decide,
It’s going on baby
Just let God decide
Deep in my soul baby
We’ve already had enough
Did God hear it from me?
Did God hear it from you?
Did God hear it from us?
We can’t, we can’t
We’ve already had enough
